SRI International has been awarded a $98.6 million contract from the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) to provide research and development support for the Advanced Microcircuit Emulation (AME) Program — a key initiative that ensures critical microcircuits no longer produced commercially can continue to support U.S. defense systems.

The award is structured as an indefinite-delivery, cost-plus-fixed-fee requirements contract, with a five-year base period and a four-month option, extending performance through January 2031. Contracting activities will be managed by DLA Weapon Systems Support in Columbus, Ohio, with funds obligated at the delivery-order level.

🔍 Why This Matters

The AME Program plays a critical role in sustaining the microelectronics supply chain for the Department of Defense. As legacy microcircuits become obsolete, the program develops form, fit, function, and interface (F3I) equivalents to keep military platforms mission-ready.

Together with its sister effort, the Generalized Emulation of Microcircuits (GEM) Program, the initiative supports more than 560 weapon systems across the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps — protecting readiness and reducing obsolescence risk across multiple domains.

⚙️ What SRI International Will Do

Under this contract, SRI International will:

  • Validate existing F3I reverse-engineering and emulation technologies.

  • Develop and enhance Advanced Microcircuit Emulation (AME) capabilities.

  • Acquire and manage government-furnished equipment (GFE) to support program needs.

  • Conduct developmental technology efforts aligned with the AME program’s strategic roadmap.

🧩 The Bigger Picture

Microcircuit obsolescence remains one of the defense industry’s toughest challenges — especially for systems built on aging semiconductor architectures. Redesigning or replacing these components can be costly and time-consuming.

By advancing the AME Program, DLA and SRI are helping ensure that trusted microelectronics remain available to sustain mission-critical defense platforms for years to come.

For government contractors, this award highlights continued opportunity in areas such as reverse engineering, trusted foundry manufacturing, and low-volume, high-reliability electronics production — all essential capabilities within the U.S. defense industrial base.
