Modernization Push Strengthens U.S. Heavy-Lift Capabilities

Boeing has landed two contracts worth $461 million from the U.S. Army to produce nine additional CH-47F Block II “Chinook” heavy-lift helicopters, marking another milestone in the service’s ongoing aviation modernization program.

These latest awards—covering Lots 4 and 5—bring the total number of Block II Chinooks under contract to 18 aircraft, reflecting the Army’s growing confidence in the next-generation rotorcraft’s capabilities and reliability.

A Major Step in Army Aviation Modernization

The CH-47F Block II upgrade represents a significant leap in heavy-lift performance. The new variant features an upgraded drivetrain, advanced fuel system, and a reinforced airframe that increases maximum gross weight by about 4,000 pounds.

These improvements enable longer range, enhanced payload capacity, and greater efficiency—essential for large-scale, multi-domain operations.

The Army plans to deploy the Block II variant across two combat aviation brigades, underscoring the aircraft’s critical role in sustaining operations across contested environments.

Boeing’s Commitment to Long-Term Capability

According to Heather McBryan, Vice President and Program Manager for Boeing’s H-47 program, the new awards demonstrate how the Chinook continues to “stand as a cornerstone in the Army’s heavy-lift family of systems.”

McBryan added that these contracts reinforce the company’s focus on reliability, survivability, and sustainment—ensuring the Chinook fleet remains mission-ready for decades to come.

Program Outlook and Industrial Impact

To date, the Army has received six production-model CH-47F Block II helicopters, which are undergoing field evaluations. The new orders will support upcoming production in Lots 4 and 5, with early planning already under way for Lot 6 deliveries.

The $461 million deal further strengthens Boeing’s industrial base, supporting hundreds of skilled jobs across its Philadelphia and Mesa facilities and throughout the national supply chain.

A Long Future Ahead for the Chinook

As the U.S. Army doubles down on modernization and mobility, the CH-47F Block II Chinook is positioned to remain its primary heavy-lift workhorse for the next 40 years.

Its combination of power, endurance, and versatility ensures it will continue to support everything from combat missions to humanitarian operations worldwide.
